First of all, note to those punks and rogue elements out there who think they might be stronger than the Sun: you totally aren't. I can't believe we are even having this conversation.

As a Tarot card, the Sun represents a time when you are finally able to participate actively, consciously, and joyfully in the work of being yourself. It's a special triumph, a merit badge earned by exploring dark and perilous trails, the hurdles of all the cards that came before it.

With the awareness you gain from reaching this special place, you're certainly better equipped to judge others' efforts -- but you're also in a great position to help those struggling up the path behind you. Enjoy your newfound strength and let it shine on others, I'm sure most of us could use the encouragement.

Enjoying the recent spike in solar activity? Last year scientists began worrying over the lack of spots and storms on the Sun's surface -- the star seemed eerily calm, deviating from its 11-year cycle, which astronomers had been observing since the 17th century. What would that have meant for us? There's no telling really. But now NASA is measuring an uptick in activity that indicates the Sun's new "monsoon season" is finally underway.

In short, the Sun knows what it's doing, even if we don't. If winter on Earth was 11 years long, and one year we had a rather late spring, I imagine it would be a lot like this. Even over five hundred years ago, when the Tarot was in its infancy, I don't think everyday people would have been shocked to learn that the Sun has its own phases and seasons like everything else does; it's still a far steadier orb than the fickle Moon, and that's all that matters.

Daylight has always been a powerful metaphor for that which reveals what is hidden. Enchantments end when the sun rises, dreams are dispelled, messengers arrive, hours are counted by its arc, and we may finally resume our discovery of this world's realities with all our senses intact. Naturally, the Sun card hints that something which has thusfar eluded you may finally be laid bare and dealt with practically. It is the victory of reason over the irrational, writ large in our world.

Once you experience that dawning realization in your current situation (and it is coming) you'll be able to proceed with nearly unprecedented optimism and fearlessness. The Sun card typically shows human figures rejoicing at the sight of our life-giving star. Our species' helplessly joyous reaction to its arrival predates our memory of ourselves. We know the sunrise is coming; we even know when, down to the minute. All the same, we celebrate its arrival -- at our innermost core we understand that it's too big an event to experience without feeling an innate sense of rightness and relief, as if it were happening for the first time. THE SUN

Last Friday a friend and I visited Coney Island, and we found ourselves to be the only people there who weren't on a high school field-trip. While stretched out on the beach we noticed a strange commotion nearby. At first I thought the unrest indicated a fight or an accident, but then someone began beating a drum, and right there at the shoreline a strange sort of party began to commence. Imagine our surprise when suddenly a human being rocketed straight up out of the crowd, reaching an almost impossible height before falling back to earth. It turns out the kids had a blanket that they were using to fling people into the air and then catch them. The throws got wilder and wilder, and each time the crowd screamed louder and louder in jubilation-- though we were convinced it was all an accident waiting to happen. It was sort of frightening at the moment, but seeing these pictures when I got home made it clear who had the most fun that day. (Hint: not us!)

The Sun can be a frustratingly simple card to turn over in a reading. It's so cheerful and bright and plain that it's hard to accept at face value. If you have any specific question in mind, Tarot-ista Mary K. Greer interprets it as a "Yes!" card; certainly it radiates assurance and joy, a surge of energy that makes it dramatically easier to sense the love, strength, and hope that we'd like to think are always all around us. Consider these peaks to be these vacations from the trials and disappointments in life, a sort of cosmic tax-return that rewards you for the endurance and patience you've mustered in tougher times. This sudden enlightenment can be infectious, and can inspire changes that affect entire communities-- but to humorless outsiders you all might just appear to be reckless and naïve. Well, maybe you are! But while others frown from the sidelines and calculate risks, you're living life to the fullest and (temporarily) shedding your earthbound concerns.
