Aesop's Fables - Strength

Aesop's Fables - Strength

One thing about these fables that blew my mind as a kid was how certain astonishing details were presented casually, with zero explanation. For example, you are just grubbing along trying to make a living and then one day a lion decides he wants to marry your daughter. It's the kind of thing that would never occur to a parent to worry about. Or, as the story tactfully says, "The old people did not know what to say."

Even as a child I knew I'd like this story more if the lion had actually gotten the girl in the end. It is never really explained why the lion is considered an unsuitable mate; he's a king, he socializes with humans fairly well, he goes to great lengths to prove his devotion. In fact, the girl's feelings for the lion are never mentioned, and no contact between them is ever described. I'd like to consider the Strength card either a prequel or sequel to the actual tale, in which we witness their initial meeting -- or perhaps their elopement.

  1. Most likely the parents simply aren't down with the polygamous commune the girl would become a part of, in which she must work hard to tear apart live animals while he does little besides fighting other males.

  2. Hey now, the story doesn't say ANYTHING about him making her move to Montana...
