Aesop's Fables - The Empress


I find the moral of this tale to be deliciously ironic coming from Juno, one of the most fiercely competitive females in the history of folklore. She urges a contentment and humility that she famously lacks -- "Do as I say, not as I do!"

That said, Juno was also the patroness of marriage and could be exceptionally generous when it suited her. As the queen of heaven itself she exemplified feminine power and vulnerability. I often describe the Empress card as being the "Queen of Queens" -- she contains the traits of all four of the deck's leading ladies. A meta-queen, if you will.
