"The World Is Full Of Rogue Agents..."

No, you're not imagining things -- there are people and forces in the world that are actively undermining your efforts and would see you fail. It's probably nothing personal; sometimes we just get in each other's way, or have something that someone else wants. Like ice cream, for example... sweet, deliciously cold ice cream. In this photo gallery of cone-thieving seagulls, the reactions of the birds' victims range from wrathful to terrified to completely oblivious. A seagull is no match for a human; I myself could probably take on several of them in hand-to-hand combat. But they're so sneaky, and the experience is so bamboozling, that they get away with it time and again.

Ultimately, the burden of defending our ourselves -- and our ice cream -- rests on our own capable shoulders. However, while the world is full of rogue agents (hell, sometimes we are them), paranoia can be just as destructive as complacency; you can waste a lot of time shooting down illusionary threats, and may still wind up missing signs of genuine interference. The higher the stakes and the farther you advance, the harder it is to keep your cool and deal with situations as they really are -- this is when you might start feeling persecuted, picked on, or downright vengeful. But while you're standing there stymied, someone else is grabbing the prize.

Don't panic -- in fact, relax. There are some situations that you just can't think your way out of, because at a certain point your mind itself is the problem, and obsession is not a viable long-term strategy. The only way to escape is to remember that you have other instincts. Look at the Eight of Cups, the Eight of Wands, the Eight of Coins. These cards demonstrate options -- deep introspection, swift action, careful cultivation -- that we tend to ignore when we feel threatened. Tear off your blindfold and address the reality of your situation on your own terms. If that means taking a tennis racket with you when you go out for ice cream, so be it. [Via]
