...In which Aesop has nothing encouraging to say about an ass's folly. I can't help but note the slight parallel between the illustration for this fable and the classical Tarot card design for the Fool. In the card, the canine's role is rather ambiguous, but in Aesop's version the clever "dog" definitely gets in a good jab at the fool in question.
It's hard to say whether the true moral here is that one should avoid foolishness altogether, or that it is ultimately impossible to conceal it. Personally, I say that if you're going to go, go all the way. Some delights are worth the cudgel, and shaming from people who don't understand can be easily laughed away.
